Dr. Uliano’s passion for this specialized training led to his cumulating master’s thesis titled “Understanding and Preventing the Active School Shooter,” which emphasized the psychological typology of school shooters through the theoretical approaches of Dr. Peter Langman. Langman is a psychologist who spent twenty years studying active school shooters and authored Why Kids Kill: Inside the Minds of School Shooters (2009).
During the development of this thesis, Dr. Uliano conducted an exclusive interview with Sandy Hook Elementary School teacher and survivor Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis, author of Choosing Hope (2015). The first-grade teacher’s interview lent the thesis with a survivor’s first-hand perspective of the horrific events which took place in her classroom. Dr. Uliano’s interview of Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis later earned accolades and widespread recognition in a national law enforcement publication.
In 2019, Dr. Uliano earned a Doctor of Education from Seton Hall University, staying true to his commitment to school safety and security. His dissertation — “Arming America’s K-12 Teachers, the Second Amendment and the Gun-Free School Zones Act: A Public Policy Analysis,” — focused on the then-controversial phenomenon of arming school staff as a potential deterrent. Dr. Uliano’s analysis offered more viable recommendations and alternatives which countered arming teachers and staff in schools. This research earned national accolades from the legal and scholastic communities and led to Dr. Uliano’s nomination for the 2020 Education Law Association’s Dissertation of the Year Award.
Dr. Uliano is currently pursuing a post-graduate certification in Applied Behavior Analysis to complement his Doctorate of Education. He is also a sought-after guest lecturer who regularly presents at several New Jersey colleges and universities, lecturing on criminal justice, research methods, and dissertation seminar.
